The term “hosting” does not describe one service, but a set of services which offer various functions to a domain name. Having a website and e-mails, as an illustration, are two separate services though in the general case they come together, so most people see them as one single service. In reality, every domain has a several DNS records called A and MX, which show the server that deals with each specific service - the former is a numeric IP address, that specifies where the website for the domain name is loaded from, while the second one is an alphanumeric string, which shows the server that deals with the emails for the domain. For example, an A record can be 123.123.123.123 and an MX record can be mx1.domain.com. Every time you open a website or send an e-mail, the global DNS servers are contacted to check the name servers that a domain name has and the traffic/message is first directed to that company. If you have custom records on their end, the browser request or the email will be forwarded to the correct server. The concept behind working with separate records is that the two services employ different web protocols and you may have your website hosted by one service provider and the e-mail messages by another.

Custom MX and A Records in Shared Hosting

If you have a shared hosting account with our company and you would like to move either your website or your emails to an alternative provider, it is going to take you literally simply two mouse clicks to do so. Our Hepsia CP provides an easy-to-use DNS Records tool, where all your domains and subdomains are going to be listed alphabetically and you're going to be able to see and modify the A and/or MX records for any of them. If you decide to use a different e-mail provider and they ask you to create more MX records than the default two, it will not take more than a couple of clicks either to add them. Also you can set different latency for these records and the lower the latency, the higher the priority a certain MX record will have. The propagation of any record that you modify or create will not take more than a few hours and if necessary, you'll also be able to set the so-called Time-To-Live value, that reveals how long a record will remain active after it's changed or deleted.

Custom MX and A Records in Semi-dedicated Hosting

The Hepsia hosting Control Panel, provided with our Linux semi-dedicated hosting services, will permit you to see the A and MX records for every one of the domains or subdomains in your account and if required, to edit any of them or set up new ones. Managing these records is incredibly easy as all domains/subdomains are going to be listed alphabetically, so modifying a record is as easy as entering it in a box and saving the change. Creating a new one takes just a few more clicks and in case you experience any troubles, you can check out our educational videos on how to set up A and MX records. Our system is intuitive enough to be used by people with no previous experience, yet advanced enough to provide you with complete control of all records and to permit you to have different A records even for domain.com and www.domain.com. If you are moving your emails to a different company and they ask you to create more than 2 different MX records, you may choose the priority of each one.
